Designers require quite a few things to make their creative process run smoothly. With all that is available to designers, I wanted to find out what tools were essential in their day-to-day work. I went around to our designers and asked them about the most crucial items they kept with them at all times.

1. Laptop

It seems that out of everything that designers carry with them, their laptop was first and foremost. Designers spend hours on end in front of their computer creating, changing, and researching for the work they produce. I found that the MacBook Pro seemed to be a favorite amongst our designers. Designers are more comfortable with MacBook Pro’s operating system and wide software support than PCs. Most designers are looking for a laptop that has great and detailed display, which they get with the MacBook Pro Retina display.

2. USB Flash Drive

A flash drive is essential to keep with you when you are a designer. Not only is a flash drive important for saving your work, but it also comes in handy when you are showing your work to clients, moving work from person to person, and taking your work home with you. Take your flash drive to the next level with fun and unique designs; USB Geek has plenty of cool options to choose from including plenty of cool USB gadgets like a USB floating ducky humidifier.

3. Sketchbook

This may seem like an obvious item for a designer to have, but it is an essential one. As a designer you may spend hours on end in front of a screen, so it’s nice to have a sketchbook with you to sketch out some raw ideas and then take them to the computer. One of our designers always carries his yellow Moleskine classic notebook with him. This Moleskine notebook is soft and flexible, perfect for keeping with you at all times. With its ribbon bookmark and back pocket you can bookmark pages to come back to as well as tear out pages and store them in the back for safekeeping.

4. Pencil by FiftyThree

With features like palm rejection, surface pressure, and erasing, the Pencil by FiftyThree is a great way for designers to express and create their work on the iPad. One of our designers never leaves the house without his. Pencil’s battery life can last up to one month for normal use with a single charge and can easily be charged with any USB port.

5. HDMI/Thunderbolt Adapter

This great gadget connects Mac, MacBooks and PC laptops to monitors, TV/HDTVs and projectors. This gadget is great for showing your work in meetings and bringing your work to clients. This adapter has resolutions up to 1080p and is an essential for our designers.
